As you know, the Center is a pediatric skilled nursing facility that provides specialized residential care exclusively for children infected with HIV/AIDS. In fact, Incarnation Children's Center is the only facility in New York City dedicated to the care of HIV/AIDS infected children.

When Incarnation Children's Center opened, we cared for infants and toddlers, and were forced to watch helplessly as many of them died. While no cure for this infection has been found, medical advances have prolonged the lives of those infected with the virus. Incarnation Children's Center is now a loving haven for toddlers through adolescents.

As drug therapy has improved, children are living longer and more active lives. As a result, the change in the ages of our children brings new challenges that in many ways are "even more" complicated and difficult. Most of these children come from troubled families, many are orphans whose parents have died from the disease, and some have serious physical or developmental problems. Unfortunately the public eye seems to have moved on from the AIDS epidemic, especially from these children, the epidemic's survivors!

HIV/AIDS is a serious, complicated disease. We have watched with wonder and awe as these courageous children cope with the demands of the disease. We provide their medical care, but in many ways that's the easy part. The hard part is finding the money to provide those things that most children take for granted.

On behalf of our staff and the children, we thank you in advance.
